The Panic Broadcast

Author: Koch, Howard Set In . . .
North America, USA, New York, New York City, New Jersey, Grovers Mill
Genre: Biography
Time Frame: Various
Published: 1970
Description: Account of 'War of the Worlds' event by someone who participated in the broadcast with Orson Welles. A fascinating account. Author makes the point, repeatedly, that a simple understanding of reality and physics would make it impossible to believe Martians were attacking Earth. Not to mention the fact that they repeatedly reminded the audience this was fiction. Nevertheless, it was on the radio so it must be true. Book notes that a few days later the broadcast was recreated in Spanish for South American audiences with similar results. An important story because people are no more sophisticated today and have difficulty distinguishing truth from fiction.
